Thursday, November 8, 1:45 pm – Mega-Verdicts in MPL: Blip or Trend

There have been a number of large verdicts and settlements in medical professional liability in recent years. In 2017, there were many of these verdicts/settlements over $10M, with 7 cases of over $40M; perhaps the most ever at that level. 2018 appears to be on a record pace. The panel will discuss the data concerning these verdicts, the reasons why more of these verdicts are being seen despite overall low claim frequency in MPL, and review common threads in these claims. They will identify reasons why these very large verdicts are occurring and formulate claims and underwriting strategies to address the risk of these claims.
